Elektron
Client: Barratt East London
Architect: Formation Architects
Structural Engineer: Whitbybird Structural Engineer
Building Services Engineer: Whitecode Design Associates
This outstanding new development in the London Docklands, being produced by Barratt Homes, comprises three spectacular towers situated just off Aspen Way on the north side of the River Thames, close to the 2012 Olympic village.
Above 4 to 5 storeys, the site enjoys stunning balcony views across the Thames towards the Dome and Canary Wharf. The opportunity to exploit these views has generated a design of one 25 storey building and two 22 storey buildings, providing 437 apartments, which 325 are available for private sale, with the remainder as affordable housing.
Tower 1 is orientated on an east to west axis, generating a public plaza in front of the building and opening up the site to link with the Docklands Light Railway concourse.
Towers 2 and 3 are orientated on a north to south axis, responding to the local urban grain. The Greenwich Meridian line bisects the site, linking the site and the river front. The Meridian line is marked with a spectacular art piece on Tower 1, adding a distinct identity to the scheme.
The scheme also features a central boiler plant, with conventional gas boilers and a CHP engine, providing heating and hot water to all the apartments. The CHP engine also produces 240kW of electricity contributing the sites overall electrical demand.
Renewable energy sources are also featured in the scheme in the form of wind turbines and photovoltaic panels, situated on the roof of each tower.
Construction Value: £60,000,000
Completion: Late 2008
